Project Details

Goal

To support open source developers who posted their work.

Summary

Open source developers seeking support must post their work under an open source license. Then they can contact Share Stellar, and if their work is good enough, a Share Stellar agent would meet them in person and decide what support is appropriate. Support includes tool and workshop access, web hosting, publicity, and requests for volunteer help. If the developer continues making progress, then they might get a project grant, or seed capital from an open source incubator in return for a share of their open source business.

Requirements

Public Availability

The work must be available on the internet. It could be on a website, blog, or anywhere else that is publicly available. If the developer does not want to pay for a website, they can post it on a free website like Github or Neocities.

Licences

Compatible Licences

For information about licensing, governance, business structure, and anything else necessary to explain the guidelines, public domain is preferred.

For video or audio with an identifiable person, the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license is preferred. Since it is non commercial, and no derivatives are allowed, people or organizations can not use it to endorse anyone or anything.

For programs, because they can be used on a server with no public release, it is preferred that the license specify that any transformations should be released publically. It is preferred that the license also that the content can be transformed, as long as the transformed work is under the same license. It is preferred that the license not require attribution. The license that fulfills the requirements, although it requires attribution, is the GNU Affero License. At the earliest opportunity, a no attribution version of the GNU Affero License should be made, then used. A donation required no attribution version of the GNU Affero License version can also be used.

For everything else, ShareAlike Generic is preferred, because it allows people to transform the content, as long as the transformed work is under the same license. This makes it more difficult for people or organizations to transform the content without giving the community more content. Since no attribution is required, it is easy to combine ShareAlike works, because there are no attributions to combine. A donation required version of the ShareAlike Generic license, such as Share Alike by Donation, can also be used.

Dual Licencing

Developers should always keep their copyright, and dual license their work as appropriate. This way, they can license their work under another license in future if desired.

They can also dual license publically, for example they can license their work under Copyright My Name and Share Alike by Donation.

Minimum Work

A developer must put at least ten hours of work into their project to be considered by Share Stellar.

Support

Resources

Resources include tool and workshop access, storage space, web hosting, publicity, and requests for volunteer help. Publicity and requests for volunteer help would be posted on Share Stellar or a related website. As much as possible, support is from someone in the community, rather than a corporation. For example, tool access would be an offer from people in the community who share their tools. Storage space would be from people in the community. Share stellar would reimburse the people for offering their resources.

Grant or Seed Capital

If the developer continues making progress, then they might get a project grant, or seed capital from an open source incubator in return for a share of their open source business. In general, projects should have a plan to eventually become an open source business.
